Robert Earl Bushweit (right) runs into his Detroit buddy, Percy, in a captured German town during WWII.
And The River Opens For The Righteous
On this Veteran’s Day 2013 I honor my father-in-law, Bob Bushweit for his service starting at the age of 18 in World War II where he fought as a member of Patton’s Third Army across Africa and Europe and actually did preserve our freedom and our democracy as part of the greatest generation.
It is not hard to see these men and women as America’s true heroes – uprooted from their lives and sent to the European or Pacific theaters under harsh, brutal and primitive conditions without any of the technology, medical advances or modern conveniences that are an afterthought for today’s military. They didn’t know if they could win, many times were on the verge of losing and the fear and isolation they experienced never stopped them.
While we honor today the service, sacrifice and loss of all our military members, there was no threat to our homeland, our freedom or our democracy from the North Koreans, the North Vietnamese, the Cambodians, the Iraqis, or the Afghanistan people. Our men and women were put in harm’s way by politicians for different reasons, none of which have ever proven to be worth it. It’s not the men and women in uniform’s fault in any way and it does not diminish their personal service but it is not the same thing as putting your life on the line to protect and defend our American way of life. It’s kind of a shame that our kids’ futures are being crucified since they’re the ones we need to resurrect us
In the many years I spent studying for the priesthood I learned that the stories of Jesus Christ’s years on our planet serve as models and lessons for all of us.
So it’s as obvious as a bad face lift that we are going through the stations of the cross and that climate change is our crucifix.
It’s been the Republican party, in the type cast role of Judas Iscariot. And the silver they betrayed us all for came from today’s Pontius Pilatus and the Romans – the dirty fuel industry top executives whose empire stretches farther and wider than Caesar’s ever dreamed of.
But unfortunately the way this version of the story is being written there is no Easter and Black Friday becomes Groundhog Day – doomed to repeat ad infinitum.
That’s because when it comes to humanity, vision and a sense of the future of their own brand, the Republican Party and their supporters makes the ancient Romans look like Quakers. Continue reading
Today is Earth Day 2012, a day filled with celebrations of the environment and all the things being done to try and improve it and make it more sustainable . You can go to events where you recycle your old paper tax records, your motor oil, your cellphone, computers and other electronics.
You can go to festivals and visit the booths of green nonprofits and solar energy companies, take part in composting workshops, learn about wildlife protectors and electric car companies. You might even get the chance to hug a person wearing a polar bear costume.
You can participate in beach cleanups, ride your bicycle with large groups in parades or march in protests against coal-fired power plants, polluters and planet-pummeling profiteers. You can even watch NBC-Universal TV and see how they turned their logo green and laugh at their funny PSAs about cutting your energy use or carbon footprint.
But what you cannot do at any Earth Day event – or any other day’s events – is change the sense of urgency of the U.S. government or the majority of our population about taking the immediate and dramatic steps necessary to avoid runaway climate change or the hell and high water that’s coming with it.
When I quit the Democratic party last summer the last straw for me was their total FAIL to take a stand and do anything about climate change. Watching their spineless jellyfish routine in the face of the unified madman approach the Republicans employed was cringe worthy to say the least.
The piss poor performance of California’s Assembly and Senate Democrats to deal with our state’s budget issues only made me feel more certain of my decision. And my personal experience working with certain Democrats at the local level helped convince me that they weren’t worthy of my loyalty or support any longer. They probably never were.
I was a registered Democrat from the time I turned 18 in 1975 until the summer of 2010. It was always an easy choice because the Republicans were so clearly the party of phonies, hypocrites and mean-spirited, self-centered, big business boot-licking, environment-hating pollution-lovers.
According to yesterday’s Environment and Energy Daily (subscription required):
“Senator John Barrasso continued his campaign yesterday to stop the Obama administration from incorporating climate change into federal plans and policies, taking aim at an interagency report released in October that proposed ways for the federal government to respond to increased frequency of severe weather events and other effects of global warming.”
Barrasso, a rightwing whack job from Wyoming, introduced a bill (S. 228) that would bar the federal government from implementing any law or regulation related to climate change, whether it has to do with cutting industrial greenhouse gas emissions or not.
That might make some Bizarro Planet sense if Barrasso was just an ignorant dolt who didn’t have any education and knew nothing about science – but he can’t cop to that. Dude was a physician before becoming the Senator from one of America’s dirtiest coal producing states.
What kind of doctor looks at the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence of rapidly accelerating global warming and then decides we should pass a law keeping the feds from doing anything about it? I’m betting the kind who had his fingers crossed when he took the pledge to “first do no harm.” The kind who still probably recommends cigarette smoking to his patients to help them calm their nerves and improve their health.
The kind who doesn’t have the balls to just come out and say, “Look, my state is the number one coal producing state in the USA and I am not going to do anything to stop the world’s #1 source of climate changing greenhouse gases from doing whatever the hell they want to in order to keep their profits and payoffs spewing. If we’ve got to sacrifice the future generations to make that happen then so be it.”
Disgraced former HP executive Carly Fiorona who is running as the bootlicking sycophant of dirty polluters and big oil for a US Senate seat in California was caught shoveling more cash into her pocketbook for her campaign last week by my heroes from Greenpeace.
California and the nation lose if unaccomplished mercenaries and carbon collaborators like Fiorona win.
The smartest scientists on the face of the planet, the ones studying climate change and global warming, are mad as hell and they’re not going to take it any more. They’re really pissed because some of the dumbest people on the face of the earth have been successfully keeping us from taking the steps we needed to take if we were going to save our children from a future existence we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies.
But the scientists now know that we’re NOT going to save our children from that hell and high water that’s coming their way. We’re going to be doomed by our lizard brains and by the people who made sure that we didn’t see what’s happening as any kind of a crisis or anything we needed to have a sense of urgency about. The people who made sure that we were forced to argue with idiots while the heat just kept getting higher and higher…
This chart and the data behind it make people who argue against taking immediate action to cut GHG emissions sound like dangerous fools.
Here’s professional con man, Tim Phillips, paid lackey for the coal, oil and gas industries trying to use the Copenhagen Climate Summit as a propaganda platform and failing miserably. It’s Tim’s job to spin the story so that you believe his clients shouldn’t have to pay for the damage they do and the endangerment their greenhouse gas spewing products put us in. Here’s smug Timmy getting his well paid lunch handed to him by a volunteer group of clean energy advocates.
How do you like me now South Bay spewers of greenhouse gases? Yeah, I’m talking to you Exxon/Mobil mercenaries who work at the Torrance refinery and you amoral assassins who get your blood money from the Chevron refinery in El Segundo.
I told you there was a new sheriff in town and that your days in my community were numbered. Did you think I was kidding?
Now the EPA is about to smack both of you upside the head – and these are only the opening smacks you both have coming. Good thing you wear those hardhats. Maybe you should have spread some of your slush fund bribe money around to the schools and libraries in Washington DC where the EPA holds it meetings instead of trying to buy your love here from desperate parents and city councils in the South Bay. The Copenhagen Climate Treaty talks start next week on Monday, the 7th of December, a day that already lives in infamy but now awaits a new nom de plume.
At the end of the first week of those talks, people all around the world will take to the streets of their communities to hold Candlelight Vigils for Survival. We’ll be holding our South Bay Los Angeles 350 Climate Action community’s candlelight vigil in Hermosa Beach.
The reason we’ll be out there is because we know that we’re the ones responsible for President Obama deciding to go to Copenhagen and that we’ll also be the ones who help convince him to lead us to a real deal that gets us to 350ppm.
We know he heard us on October 24, and we’ll make sure he hears us again on December 11. We know he needs our voices to drown out the Greenhouse Gas Gang who are freaking out because when we cut emissions we cut their profits.
